Migration Complete (mostly)

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I’ve moved everyone’s files and mail.  You should have everything you had before.  If you don’t, please let me know ASAP.

Sieve (mail filtering) scripts and squirrelmail addressbooks/settings are the last thing I have to migrate.  I just have to figure out how to do it.

Migration Proceeding!

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Most users will have the mail and files back now.

The rest of you should have it soon, hopefully by the end of the day.

Things are going very well, and I’m happy with the new server. Thanks iWeb!

iWeb!

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Well, UltraHosting sucked.  Don’t go there.  At least, don’t use their VPS service.

Capybara is now hosted in Montreal on a dedicated server at iWeb.  It’s way faster, and hopefully it will be way more stable.  We also have more bandwidth, better support, and all sorts of other goodies.

I’m pulling stuff across from the UltraHosting machine, and then I’m going to turn it off.

Mail is already migrated, and your files will be along tonight.  Then I’m going to continue where I left off moving stuff from the old miso, which is sitting on my coffee table making lots of noise.

Still Unsettled…

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Due to some problems at the current host, I’m working on a better option.  This will involve migrating things again, but it will be faster, easier and smoother this time.  I’ll keep you all informed!

Rotate This RSS is BACK!

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

I got the Rotate This RSS importer/feed generator working again. For those of you who were using it, enjoy!

File Recovery Started — Email Soon!

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

I’ve got the old miso server running in my apartment now, and I’m starting to pull files off of it. I’m starting with everyone’s home directory. Depending on what I think of your unix accumen, you will either see a tarball of your files appear in your home directory, or I will restore all your files for you. Or if your home directory is huge, I might be contacting you asking what to do with it all.

Once I get that stuff moved, I will begin migrating IMAP mailboxes!

Holy crap that old server is loud.  Pentium4 feels so crappy and old-school these days.

CVS migrated!

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

CVS has been migrated to the new server. You shouldn’t notice that anything has changed (except maybe your password).

CVS_RSH="ssh";CVSROOT=":ext:username@miso.capybara.org:/var/cvs"

Remote backups functional!

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Because capybara is now virtual and I have no idea where it is physically, I’m doing a daily backup of its full drive to my media PC at home. I’m using the awesome package rsnapshot to get the job done.  It’s a handy wrapper around rsync+ssh+GNU cp which makes the whole process extremely bandwidth efficient.

SquirrelMail Ooops!

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

I had a bug in the SquirrelMail configuration… it was creating extra Trash, Drafts and Sent folders. Also, it was sending mail from youraddress@localhost.capybara.org… bleh!

These problems have both been fixed, and if you have those extra folders kicking around and would like them killed, let me know.

You might want to go into the Options in SquirrelMail and set up your name and other things again.

Upgrade/Transition Status

So, here’s some detail about what’s been going on in the world of Capybara.  First, here’s what happened:

Bad luck!  My server crashed on the day when everyone left Toronto to visit their families for the christmas holidays.  The office where it was hosted would be closed until the new year, and there was no hope of rebooting it without serious inconvience to many parties.  I didn’t want to wait until Jan 5 to get things back online, so it was time to figure out an alternative.

The alternative: a new server, at a new host.  I picked up a simple Virtual Private Server account from a hosting provider on Dec 24.  They got me set up quite quickly after some trouble processing my payment.  I started to get things set up on the new box.  And then took off for Berlin to attend 25c3.

The VPS was not perfect though… processes were randomly dying, the system was running out of memory, and things were generally being crappy.  After several back-and-forth trouble ticket chains with the host, they claim to have fixed the problem for good.  We’ll see.

I can access the old capybara machine again.  I’m making an appointment with Jonathan to go pick up the physical computer, at which point I will start sending all the old files and emails to the new system.  I will be making automated backups of the new system on a frequent basis using rsync to my home computer.

So, that’s where we are.  If you don’t have an account and you think you should, please send me an email.  I recreated accounts from memory, and probably missed a few.  I’m not locking you out, I just forgot about you!

Likewise if you’re having any problems or are missing any applications from your shell account, get in touch… things are easy to install!
