SomeLondonISP maintains connections to Kitchener, Brantford, and Hamilton where they have points of presence.
Your task is to examine the throughput on these links and try to decide if they are fast enough for the customers as well as the administrative traffic that they must support.
During our first meeting with SomeLondonISP, SomePerson provided us with an alternate project task. He wanted us to monitor SomeLondonISP's traffic on their London VLANs, especially those London Hydro ATM Fiber ring, and determine the bandwidth used by each of their clients.
At first, the problem was overwhelming. We were not even familiar with the terminology used to describe it. We had to collect basic information about several pieces of hardware and their interaction before we could even understand the problem.
We needed to gather background information on the following:
As we completed some initial research, the problem became more concise:
Our task was to determine exactly what information was needed by SomeLondonISP, and find the correct places in either the switch the router's SNMP tree where this data resides. We then had to develop a method to collect, process, and display this data.
